Interactive Exploration

Como Smart City for satisfied citizens

This interactive visualization showcases the outputs of the modelling techniques we have developed using data about the city of Como. For a selection of representative months and days of the week, simulations of people movement and activity levels throughout the city can be explored.

How to use the tool

Movement simulation

Using the buttons in the panel on the right hand side, it is possible to select a month and day of the week to explore. The 'play' button will start the movement simulation, based on the Linear Programming model. The transitions can be filtered based on provencance to visualise differences in movement between local, italian and international visitors.

Toggling, the 'show traces' button, it is also possible to show the paths taken during the simulation, where each line represents one journey between two clusters. The traces can be used to infer the popular routes taken by people within the city.

Activity level time series

In parallel, a stacked bar chart is updated as the simulation proceeds with the count of people in each region over time. Toggles can be used view the counts for different subgroups of age or gender.

Density

Furthermore, it is possible to add the density of people in the city as a heatmap based on the Gaussian Process model, and the evolution of the density over the day can be viewed. NB: The transitions and density of people are computed hourly and the simulation runs over this discrete unit of time, therefore any interaction has visible effects only in the hour next to the click.
